Non-operative (or conservative) management means treating knee injuries without surgery. This approach uses various treatment modalities to reduce symptoms, restore function and prevent further injury.
Non-operative management is appropriate for a range of injuries such as minor cartilage injuries, partial ligament tears or tendon injuries and sprains around the knee where these types of injuries can often be managed successfully without the need for surgery. For patients who do not participate in high-impact/pivoting sport or those who have his risks of undergoing surgery due to other medical conditions, we often manage these non-operatively in the first instance
- Rest – avoiding activities that stress the knee and using crutches or a brace can often help settle the knee following an injury
- Pain control – Paracetamol and anti-inflammatory medications as well as ice therapy can help reduce pain and swelling within the knee following an injury
- Braces – adjuncts that can provide an external support to the knee and reduce instability
- Physiotherapy – rehabilitation is key following any knee injury with the first goal to improve your range of motion followed by strengthening the muscles around the knee (quadriceps and hamstrings) to improve stability. At Glasgow Knee Surgery Clinic we have links to several leading physiotherapists within the region and can recommend and liaise directly with them regarding your injury.
If symptoms such as instability, pain or functional limitations continue then surgery can be considered.
